Free AI essay grader for teachers
Paste the prompt, your rubric criteria and a student's essay. Mentora's AI grades the essay against each criterion, the same way it grades in the full product, and gives you a score in seconds.
How the AI essay grader works
- 1
You set the criteria
Write what the essay should do and how many points each part is worth. The grader drafts what a weak, partial and full answer looks like for each one.
- 2
It grades criterion by criterion
The essay is judged against each criterion separately and the points add up, so you can see where every point came from.
- 3
It tells you when it's unsure
If the grader is torn on a criterion, it says so. In Mentora, that essay waits for your review before the student sees a grade.
Grade the whole class, not one essay
Mentora is the AI grader for teachers that tells you what to reteach. Create an exam with AI, give it to your class, and every answer is graded against your rubric as students turn it in. Then you get a debrief: what the class understood, who needs help, and what to teach next.
Frequently asked questions
Is the AI essay grader free?
Yes. You get 3 free gradings a day, with no account. The score shows right away; the breakdown by criterion and the feedback unlock when you join the Mentora waitlist.
How accurate is AI essay grading?
It grades against your criteria, not a generic standard, and judges each criterion on its own, so every point can be checked. It can still be wrong, which is why it flags the essays it's unsure about and why the final grade is always yours.
What rubric should I use?
The criteria you would use yourself: up to five, each worth 1 to 10 points. Write them the way you would explain them to a student, for example "Supports each claim with evidence from the text."
What happens to the essay I paste?
It is sent to our AI provider to be graded and is not used to train AI models. We don't store the essay itself. The result (your criteria, the score and the feedback, which can quote the essay) is kept for a day so you can unlock it, then deleted. Leave the student's name out.
Can it grade a whole class?
Not here. In Mentora, students take the exam online and every answer is graded as they turn it in, written answers included, followed by a debrief of what to reteach. We're opening spots in small batches; join the waitlist to get one.
